January 13, 1989

It's a Friday the Thirteenth, and I receive a call from the Southern Regional Office in Atlanta offering me a promotion to the Norcross Kmart store, #3545.  I accept.  Upon arriving a week later, I meet my new assistant manager who was also a UGA graduate, and who was also at Trafalgar Square in London for New Year's Eve 1986.  Something else we have in common is that we're both looking for a 40-hour/ week job that will require a degree.

My last day at #9657 in Cornelia GA. with employee Betty.

A month before Megrahi was released, someone has placed this LIMITED EDITION 1988 K-Mart plate at the thrift store that I frequent.  The plate number is 70485, which was the date of my last day in Greece.  The front of the plate features a little girl named Lauren who is holding Christmas Lights.  The image also became the cover of Kmart's Christmas in America book.

But I digress.  You're not here for nostalgic Kmart commercials.  The TIMELINE mentioned Gaddafi.   As you see below, some in the media are still making fun of the PAA103 disaster.  This comic ran 1-10-1989, just 3 days before the promotion.

It was the same day that I was promoted that Gaddafi returned the remains a fighter pilot who had been shot down over Libya in 1986.  I located the article published in the AJC on 1-14-1989.  For you websurfers:  the point is only made here if you have reviewed the PAA103 (especially page 3) that's found on the TIMELINE (at the 12-21-1988 date).

And published 1-15-1989 was this article about the family request for an autopsy.

Reviewing the archives of this week in January 1989 became more nostalgic when I got to the article below about "Mr. Brigham."   At the Red and Black Newspaper in Athens, GA, there was a 'Ms. Brigham' that traveled to France with a college tour group.  Laura Brigham's arm became numb on the return flight and she was not able to move it.  She was taken from Atlanta Hartsfield Airport to the emergency room at a local hospital.  She was diagnosed with a brain tumor and died a few years later.   The Red and Black archives are on-line now, and...

... I was able to upload a STAFF BOX from an issue published in March 1984.  Laura was the Inside Sales rep.

I will be at Kmart for 19 more months.  My last day is October 3, 1990, just two days after the formation of the Scottish Fatal Accident Inquiry Panel.  My new job at Delta Air Lines begins 10-08-1990.
